Get off Auto mode

A Year With My Camera: Module 1

SHOOT CONFIDENTLY OFF AUTO MODE

This course takes you from pressing the shutter button on Auto mode and getting an image with no idea what happened, to being able to control every element of the exposure.

THIS COURSE IS FOR YOU IF...

- you are a beginner photographer

- you have a camera with manual controls that you don't really know how to use

- you want to learn to shoot off auto, taking control of the aperture and shutter speed

- you often get photos that are too dark or too light, and you don't know how to fix it

- you feel guilty that you aren't getting the most out of your big camera

WHAT'S INCLUDED?

The course includes 6 lessons with video instruction, progress quizzes and checklists.

Each of the lessons has a practical photography homework, and there are 2 final projects to complete once you have done all the lessons.

This version of the course does not include individual feedback. This course plus feedback starts at £300 and is only offered when I have availability; the feedback version is currently sold out until 2018.

BY THE END OF THE COURSE:

You will be able to...

- use aperture to blur the background

- use aperture to make sure everything is in focus

- use shutter speed to freeze the action

- use shutter speed to creatively blur your subject

- use ISO as an emergency backup in low light

- correct over and under exposed photographs instantly, before you press the shutter

- shoot on Manual mode (and you'll know when to shoot on Manual, and when you don't need to)

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is this course for?
This course is for beginner photographers who have a camera with manual controls. It might be a DSLR, a mirrorless, a CSC or a bridge camera. Your camera might still be in its box, or you might have tried many times to understand what all the buttons and dials are for. This course is for you if you finally want to understand how to shoot off auto mode, and you've got around a month to practise.
What is A Year With My Camera?
A Year With My Camera is my flagship beginner's photography workshop. It consists of 10 modules, designed to take you around a year to complete if you do all 10 modules. Each module can be taken separately, and take between a month and 6 weeks to complete individually. This course is module 1 of A Year With My Camera.
How long does this course take?
The course is designed to take about 6 weeks to complete, at the rate of 1 lesson a week, and a weekend to do the end of course projects. For each lesson you need about half an hour to watch the video and read the instructions. Each homework will take between 1 and 3 hours, depending on which lesson you are working on. You can spend much more than 3 hours on each lesson, if you want to practise more extensively. If you are progressing more quickly, you could finish faster than 6 weeks.
What camera do I need?
You need a camera with manual controls, but not necessarily one where you can change the lenses. As long as you have the ability go off auto modes and onto aperture priority, shutter priority and manual mode, you will be able to complete this course.
Do I need to buy the A Year With My Camera workbook?
You do not need to purchase the workbook to take this course. The entire Part 1 of the workbook (Chapters 1-6) is included as a pdf download once you have joined.
When does the course start and finish?
This is a completely self-paced online course - you decide when you start and when you finish.
How long do I have access to the course?
After enrolling, you have unlimited access to this course for as long as you like - across any and all devices you own.
What if I am unhappy with the course?
If you are not satisfied with your purchase, contact me in the first 30 days and I will give you a full refund.
Where can I get a hard copy of the workbook?
Many people like an actual book rather than a pdf. If you are one of them and want the accompanying workbook, you can find it on Amazon - search for "A Year With My Camera". For this module you'll want Workbook 1. You do not need to buy the workbook to take this course - a pdf of the relevant chapters is included for you to download.
